Badwater....closer to death... for sure....

Cy...Took a casual summit hike yesterday, then back down to 20 min rock...still along way from an easy ascent without crampons. May give her a go tomorrow as we are leaving on the 22 for the sea to crater hike on maui then back to Alaska for the summer.

See you in November i guess.

Bivouac, which trail do you take on Maui to the summit of the Haleakala?

Is it from the Hana side or the other side?

Hey there Lilbitmo...

This is a 60 BD thing. Been through the crater both ways in many directions many times beginning in 1974 and i love the place.

This year we will be dropping the bikes at science city (10,000 feet) in the evening. The following morning (early) we drive up through Kula to Ulapalakua Ranch, down through Kanaio Homesteads (paralleling the old Kings Highway) and when we reach the old Kaupo Store we turn left up the old road which leads to the the trail head in a mile. It will be an all day affair because it's 8 hours and 9000 feet to the rim and then a 90 min bike down through the Polipoli forest to the old Kula road and then three hours back down the old highway to Kaupo. As you may recall most of the biking is down hill.

Wish I could but not this year but I'm always looking for information on hikes on Maui, I really like the Poli Poli State Park area and the rain forest on that side - Love the Kula Lodge for lunch and or dinner - views are some of the best on the whole island.
