Mt. San Jacinto Outdoor Recreation

Howdy folks, longtime lurker, third time poster here. I want to throw out a question to everyone a get your opinions on what are the best all around crampons for stomping up to the peak, winter time skyline, or even snow creek if need be. I have a 30 + year old, beat up pair of Salewas, and was looking to upgrade to a good pair general mountaineering crampons. I've heard that the Stubai ultralight universals are good, and will attach to just about anything including flip flops. I'm just afraid that they may be too lightweight for the demands of San Jac and San Gorgonio. Thanks for any opinions offered.

I have those Stubais and have used them with trail runners. Fine for moderate snow fields particularly in the late spring season. They are aluminum so they have the aluminum downsides of not punching through hard ice as easily as steel and going dull faster, very fast if you walk on rock with them. I got them for their light weight, as most of the time tye are in my pack rather than on my feet.

Thanks asabat. I was looking at the Stubai's because they would attach to my Hardrocks. After 30+ years of hauling 50-60 lb packs into the mountains, I finally was bitten last year by the lightweight bug. Now my pack is less than 30 lb. The Stubai's seem to fit the bill, but I'm thinking they may not be good for something like Snow Creek. Anyone who has gone up there lately have any thoughts? As always, any opinions are greatly appreciated.

I have two pair now, petzel's (which i love) and sabertooth black diamonds. if you are looking for a strap i suggest the petzel's.

I bet there's an interesting story behind your screen name...

I love my Black Diamond stainless steel contact (strap on) crampons with the ABS plates. I can adjust them to fit numerous boots and they're pretty light.

Skunk, I like the Petzel strapons..the teeth are a little longer and pointier than the BD's, theyve been great everywhere I've gone here in socal .
