A better title for this post might be "A Ramble Through the Bramble." On Wednesday I thought I would check out the Wildhorse Trail (off Hwy 79 South just past Temecula) and aim for Eagle Crag. Having been this way a few years ago and encounterig poison oak that blocked the trail, I brought clippers with me this time. Much to my joy, the trail was fairly free of poison oak, but the further up I went the more overgrown with other stuff the trail became. Also, the trail undulated up and down a lot as it crossed several small washes. So at 8 miles I was at only 3200 feet elevation (the trailhead is about 1400 ft) and Eagle Crag is 5077 feet. It became apparent that I wasn't going to make it to the crag, so I turned around. The highlights of the trip were the wildflowers and the somewhat hazy views of San J and San G.
I want to try again with an earlier start in a couple of weeks when the flowers are really going crazy. Anyone (Bigwookie?) wanna come along and bag a crag and do a little trail maintenance?
