oh i am planning a grand trip in May, want to fly to portland, rent an suv, drive to hood. do hood (allow three days for this, arrival-sleep-guide-climb-back to sleep) then drive down to shasta (i believe it is a 7 hr. drive) do shasta (allowing two days for this-the same gig as hood minus the guide). i planned all this in my head once i could see hood from shasta.
i would actually like to go before may as well, to shasta that is.

Shasta is beautiful. I have a thing for those Ultra-Prominent Peaks - they stand out among the rest and the view from the top is usually spectacular.
Here's a List of Ultra-Prominent Peaks in the United States:

The view from the top is fantastic
Which guide are you using?
Which peak are you planning on after Shasta?

we will do a guide to do mt. hood (its the only way he can do it and the only way my mom will have piece of mind as well). to do shasta we won't have a guide. after that cy i figure I would head up the west coast until i hit alaska.

Wow - what a trip. Are you including Raiier and Denali.? What a volcanic bonanza that would be. Here is a good link for Shasta
