Mt. San Jacinto Outdoor Recreation

A friend asked me if i knew of a site providing current conditions (water access and snow coverage i think is what he's interested in) for the John Muir trail. I did some quick Google searches but didn't find what he is looking for. Any of you folks have a site i can share?

i solo hiked the JMT last year and i remember spending lots of time searching for info.

i like trailjournals.com ...good up dates on trail conditions..the pct hikers provide much of the good stuff.

Best way (most years) is to check the PAcific Crest Trail Association's web site. They have a "Trail Conditions" section ( one of the six black boxes in the middle of the webpage). Clikc on that, then click on the "Central California" section, then the section from Mt. Whitney to Tuolome(sp) Meadows.

Trail conidtion reports are highly dependent on hikers logging on somewhere along the route and posting conditions. Unfortunately no info for this section this year.

Your friend could also post on summitpost.org or the Whitneyportalstore forum to see if anyone has any info. If you can get some beta on Forester Pass (the highest part of the JMT/PCT) that would be a good way to estimate what snow and water conditions are like this year.

Interesting question Florian. I've done sections of the JMT, and I'd guess that water availability is a very secondary issue - water is generally all over the place between Whitney and Tuolumne. Now, snow conditions might be different, that's got a lot of potential for stopping/re-routing a hike. If you find a good link, please be sure to post it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My friend is heading up there today with family. I don't think they're actually doing any backpacking. Just some day hikes.
