This is v. cool. You must have really good karma to have seen them, twice!

The trick question is now, are they Desert Bighorn or Sierra Nevada Bighorn? if the latter, you should report it because they are nearly extinct.

Searching will yield a lot of info on bighorns in CA.
The bighorns in the San Gabriels are generally classified as Ovis canadensis nelsoni or desert bighorn.
The Sierra bighorn have been recently (2008) been called a subspecies of Ovis canadensis californiana and are Ovis canadensis sierrae according to USFWS.
This was done using mitochondrial DNA testing.
Still there is some debate of classification of all of the bighorn in the west.

The nelson subspecies is hunted in many of its' areas in CA; including the White Mts. they suffer from mostly poor habitat and mountain lions.
The Sierra subspecies is not hunted and has suffered greatly from domestic sheep grazing and mountain lions.
