okay guys, i will be doing whitney sept 6th, i was curious as to how long you might think the hike will take? your average hiker that is.

The average length of time for most hikers seems to range from 12-17 hours round trip.

For dayhikes, I like to start early - sometime between 2 and 3AM. That puts you back at the Portal in daylight.

You are able to do the Skyline Trail faster than I can; so I'll bet you'll be faster than I am on Whitney. It has taken me 8 to 8.5 hours to get up Whitney and then 5 hours to come down; so 13 to 13.5 hours. I think you will be able to do the uphill in 7 hours or less, which will bring you down to 12 hours or under round-trip.

This is just my guess - sometimes it gets to be really slow going up there between trailcrest and the summit if the thin air gets to you.

I'll be there at the same time.
I have a multi-day permit starting on the 5th, so our summit day should be the same.
We're camping at the Portal on the 4th, planning on Trail Camp on the 5th; and depending upon how all goes, summiting on the 6th and either heading all the way down - or stopping to rest again at Trail Camp.

So, we kinda plan on 36-48 hours
