seems to me that even with all its flaws it's still better to have it then not. An additional feature that would confirm that a distress signal was received by someone would help a lot. Like, "Got it, help is on the way". If I knew for sure after being bitten by a snake that sar was alerted I wouldn't move. Wondering if they were would be about the same as if I wasn't carrying it at all. I would be moving slowly to the closest place to be seen by someone as if it wasn't recieved. If it is tracking me while I move then so much the better but I'm gonna go as if it wasn't.
For me I believe it's just a matter of time before a snake bites me. Even with all the noise I make with my poles, my squeaky pack and clomping footsteps, eventually there will come a time when I'm not paying 100% of my attention on what's behind a rock or bush around a corner. And eventually there is going to be a snake there that I step on or close enough to and there I am! Out in the middle of nowhere, with fang juice in my blood stream.

That's odd. I could see it happening, say, in total fog. But otherwise, you'd think people would have some pretty strong natural ability to maintain course. Not perfect, but not continuously going in circles either!

Oh well. Perhaps that explains a great deal about the rest of my life...
