BENCHMARKS FOR PEAKS

Postby FIGHT ON » Tue Apr 22, 2008 6:20 am

Does Mt. San Jacinto have one of those elevation benchmarks for sale? I went into the Ranger Station near Mill Creek after I hiked San Gorgonio and saw that they had one. I bought it and I also found one for Mt. Whitney at their Ranger Station that I got. Do they make benchmarks for peaks other than these two? I think it would be cool to have one for every peak.

Every peak? I have one for Mauna Kea and have seen some others of various prominent well visited peaks. I would assume there has to be enough interest for the company to produce one for a particular peak unless special order? They do look cool...wear as conditioning summit pins for your hat or pack? Snake bite shields for the ankles?:)

Here's a website that sells 'em, along with a good assortment of other popular peaks. Can't take credit for it, though - someone posted it on another BB:

Cool. I am going to get a San Jacinto one. Can't believe they don't have one for Baldy. Seems to me that a lot of people go up there. I know it is not as high as others but it is still a peak that deserves one. I bet they would profit from having them at the Ranger Station.

They might make a little money from it.
The replicas are replicas of actual benchmarks, as Baldy doesn't have an actual benchmark; nothing to replicate.

Suppose they could copy the sign though.

I'm still kinda surprised that Baldy, being the highest point in LA County; doesn't have a benchmark.

I believe Baldy DOES have a benchmark; at least it had one 10 years ago when I took a picture of it with an old film camera. If memory serves me right, its towards the north side of the summit area. And it has the mountain's real name on it - Mt. San Antonio. Considering what happens in the forests these days, I wouldn't be surprised if someone 'wrenched' it off as a souvenir.

(Hmmm . . . good excuse to go hiking over labor day weekend . . . find that benckmark on Baldy!)

It'd be interesting to see a report of that. On my one and only visit there last month, I did not see one. There is not one listed in the USGS database for LA or SB Counties. The databases are not complete, though. The ACME mapper USGS map shows a triangulation station Old Baldy 2 it looks like. And West Baldy shows one also; again, I didn't see that one either.

I did find a benchmark at the Notch as shown on the map.

I took this picture on 09-21-2008, about 75 feet or so north of the summit plaque on Baldy. It's about the size of a quarter...
