San Gorgonio via South Fork 9-13-08

Postby AlanK » Sun Sep 14, 2008 2:03 pm

My son Eric had a cross country meet in Redlands in the morning, so I decided to hike San Gorgonio in the afternoon (I got off to a genuine Piotrowski start at 12:39). I faxed in an application for Vivian Creek last Monday but ended up with a South Fork permit. I decided to do the Dollar Lake Saddle route, which I had not done since 2001. Two things I learned were (1) according to my GPS, the route is 9.6 miles each way, not the advertised 11 and (2) it takes about the same time as Vivian Creek (I made it to the top in 3:06, which is a good time for me on Vivian Creek).

On the summit, I ran into Jeff and Arthur (aka Doogie Man). They were planning on spending the night on the summit. I, on the other hand, had to head back to my car, which I managed to reach before dark.

Good stuff, Alan.

My wife and I were at the S Fork Trailhead around 4:30 PM. It looks like you were there shortly thereafter (judging by the shadows)? We had hiked at the Forsee Creek Trailhead, but I was showing her the S Fork T'head.
