Alto Diablo March 13

Howdy All :)

Headed up yesterday with Marilyn and Heather.

Views from Poopout hill viewing area. By golly, there's snow in them thar hills...let's go get some!

Once at the wilderness boundary, we headed up the ridge directly to the right of the sign.

Looking west as we're gaining elevation. We started climbing in microspikes but switched to snowshoes when we sunk in too much. Occasionally we'd walk over to the west side of the ridge and look down into the avalanche gully.

The ridge connects to the San Gorgonio backbone just to west of Alto Diablo.

Heather heading up to the summit of Alto Diablo.

View of Big Bear lake from the summit.

Image

Looking east -- that big rounded peak in the foreground is Charleton.

Image

Looking west towards Shields peak.

Image

Looking north-east, the clouds were epic.

Image

Looking south towards the Yucaipa ridge.

Image

Marilyn on Alto Diablo.

Looking back at Alto Diablo after we'd left the summit.

Image

Heading back down the ridge. Love the V-shaped log.

Image

Heading down from Poopout hill -- it looks like it could actually snow.

Image

See the snow flakes on the left side of the photo?

Image

Further proof it snowed lightly.

Another great day in the mountains 8)

I saw what looked like thunderheads over Gorgonio from home here in Temecula yesterday and was wondering if there was anyone out there and if it was raining or snowing. Well, THAT answers my question! What a beautiful, but I bet chilly, day!

I think you are on to a new way to do the 9 Peaks Challenge, Ellen. Every other day you bag one of the 9 Peaks. So far you've got Charlton and Alto Diablo. So this Saturday what will it be... San Bernardino Peak or Anderson Peak? (Oh-oh, I hope I didn't just plant an idea in your head!)

My favorite by far is Shields, but what good would it be with it's awe beneath plain white drifts?
