Primitive camping options for Death Valley?

Postby Elwood » Mon Jan 10, 2011 11:39 am

I'm looking for a good spot south of Furnace Creek, up one of the canyons along West Side Road? We plan on exploring the following canyons: Trail, Hanaupah, Johnson, & Warm Spring. I thought there might be a nice spot a few miles up one of the dirt roads leading west of West Side Road? Thanks! Elwood

Backcountry camping is restricted in DVNP.
See http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/backcamp.htm
Also the forum mentioned above.

As asabat mentioned backcountry camping is restricted, but there are also lots of nice spots where you can camp. I camped about 4 miles up the Trail Canyon road a couple of springs ago and enjoyed a perfect night. There are also some neat cabins up Warm Springs canyon where you can spend the night if they aren't occupied.

Thanks! Everyone, I was unaware of a nice spot up Trail Canyon, someone from the Death Valley forum told me of a good spot up Johnson Canyon. The DVNP forum isn't as active as this one, & I figured there's a lot of San Jacinto folks, that also enjoy DVNP. I'm trying to get some ideas, so that I'm not driving around aimless the first night. I like the central location of Johnson Canyon, but I'm concerned about it being the busiest of the 4-canyons, due to the attraction of Hungry Bills Ranch. Elwood
