I am curious to hear the guys story. That Lazy W ranch is very close to a fire station and the highway. I wonder where he spent the 3 days.

This doesn't seem like a guy vs. girl question, I don't really see any controversy here. Rumpled simply said it sounds weird, and to be fair, it does sound a little odd.

What's odd about the situation with the shorts? Well, I've gone skinny dipping in creeks and lakes out in the wilderness on hot, windy days. My shorts have never blown away. How far could they blow? Were they really good camouflage print? It's possible she felt embarrassed and buried them or put them under a rock, or maybe she kept moving for a while after she took them off...it just seems weird that they disappeared. I don't think it's mean to ask about an odd detail like that.

To me, the two real problems here are 1) they separated and 2) they had no signaling device when they went into a remote, unfamiliar area. This is not rocket science. Bad choices make consequences much more severe, and they almost paid with their lives.

Like everyone, I'm glad they're alive, and I hope to see them out here on our trails sometime. If I do, I promise I won't ask about the shorts!

Shorts

I think the article is real clear that she "Soiled herself" from bad Diarrhea.
I more than likely would have thrown them away myself, no water to clean up, good bye shorts

The article said she had diarrhea and had started her period. I've wanted to jettison my shorts before just from having chafing. I can imagine her getting those things off ASAP. In a life or death situation modesty is an unnecessary extravagance.

Also, the Santa Ana winds were blowing. I used to live in OC and when those winds blow it is very possible for them to blow almost anything away. A pair of shorts would be nothing.

There may be questions to ask about this story but the shorts thing did not even raise an eyebrow with me.
