Empire State Buildings

How many Empire State Bulidings would you have to stack on top of each other to equal the gain up from the Museum to San Jacinto Peak?

Not sure what the definition of spire is, but if you disregard everything that most people would consider "spire" according to the following diagram, the building is about 320 meters high:

320 meters is 1050 feet. There is roughly a 10,500 ft altitude difference between the museum and the summit, so I'll say 10.

Hey Norris. I came up with 8 and one third. I'm guessing the total c2c gain is around 10,400 feet from the Museum and the building height from the ground to the roof is 1250 feet according to this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_state_building
Either way that's a whole lotta Empire State Buildings stacked up on top of each other. And after you make it to the top you get to go down a few just for fun!

Fight On, It's amazing when you think about it, that one would have to climb all the stairs in the Empire State building somewhere between 8 and 10 times over to equal C2C. No wonder its rated one of the toughest day hikes in the country. My question: What hikes are harder?

Locally, Bad water to Telescope Peak.
A bit farther off is S2S...Sea to Summit on Mauna Loa, 13,700'+ all going up. Any takers?

Some would say Mt. Baldy from Heaton Flat. Start at Heaton Flat on N Fork of San Gabriel River, ascend Iron Mountain, a very tough hike in it's own right, traverse across San Antonio Ridge (cross country, class 3) to the summit of Mt San Antonio (Mt. Baldy), and return. Good luck.
