Hi Ellen - If you want to strengthen and test your legs without doing any downhill (on a Saturday early morning soon after 5 am) might I suggest taking two cars to the lower tram station and driving us both down in one car.
You can get 2000 ft elevation gain in four miles without stepping on any rocks and putting any strain on your knees. If you are hurting on the way up I can walk down and bring up my car.
