Southern Calif will have a perfect pass of the space station (ISS) tonight(Wed, 8/8/12). The spacecraft will pass directly overhead. Look south-west starting at 8:14pm.

Another celestial viewing that might interest some folks:

Look up in the eastern sky just before dawn and you'll see two bright objects that don't 'twinkle' like stars - the lower, brighter one is Venus, the upper one (upward and to the right of Venus by about 20 degrees) is Jupiter.

zip, here's a quick link for you to check upcoming dates, rise and transit times, and 'where to look' info for upcoming flybys visible from your ZIP code.

(This site cuts to the more notable objects; don't want to put you to sleep with other more definitive noidy content including your own tracking freeware ;-)

"There are hundreds of satellites in Earth orbit; we cut through the confusion by narrowing the list to a half-dozen or so of the most interesting. At the moment we are monitoring a number of spy satellites, the International Space Station, and the Hubble Space Telescope. Feedback is welcomed. "

e.g., ISS Aug 10, 20:03 rise Yucaipa time, 2 1/2 min viewing, magnitude -2.4 (VERY bright!)

PS nice bear photo! exciting to see in your own yard; hope the furry critters don't go down the path of bad luck becoming too accustomed to contact with Hoomanses..

Thanks noidy, I'll be able to spot things on my own now. THis will be fun.

About the bear, I don't have special bear trash cans - no one in our neighborhood does, so I hope his visits are only occasiona. Perfectly peaceable little guy, I really enjoyed spending time with him.

In Banff town there is a bear-proof dumpster about every block.
I was told that all neighbors daily take their trash there,
except for occasional renters who lose their deposit.

I bet an occasional renter might make a deposit if he encountered a bear at night.
