Peak Identifier application for I-phone's

Postby lilbitmo » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:58 pm

OK Techies, three years ago a friend showed me an app on his new I-phone that when the camera was on or the mapping software, cannot remember which, he could point his phone at the surrounding hills and it will name the peaks - had to be a known peak but it was fun to play with. I'm out of touch with that person (not responding to their phone  ) so I'm asking if anyone knows the name of that application, I got a new I-phone for Christmas and turned it on this past week, now it's time to add some cool app's.
I looked all over the I-phone app page online but could not find it.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance :D

For Droids I've installed an app called PeakAR. It shows some peaks out to about 50 miles. It uses the phone's camera screen and puts the peak labels on there. I haven't played with it in the field enough to see how it calibrates with the compass and GPS yet.

I've not used any app like this but the idea sure piqued my interest. Here are a few I found on the App Store. Though not the best ratings...

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ar-mtn.-usa/id475989654?mt=8

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peakfinder-usa-west/id387214656?mt=8

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peaks/id332170121?mt=8

Please keep us posted if you end up trying any of these.
