Formula for ideal marathon pace

Howdy All,

Saw this and immediately thought of AlanK, Z-dude, Ze and Grandmaster Perry. Back in 2007 we had a conversation about foot-pounds climbing Skyline  and I learned that AlanK is a physicist.

A formula for an ideal marathon pace might stave off hitting the wall

It would be interesting to see the results of plugging in data from very successful marathoners to see how successful the predictions are.

I second that! Goooooooo Eric!

Alan, will you post and let us know how it goes? Of course, win, bonk, or in between, I'm still a fan.

nice paper, thanks Ellen. I looked through it a bit - not bad but doesn't look like they actually take into account real conditioning level (they use VO2max, which isn't a good predictor). I plugged in some of my stats and didn't match up (20 ml/min/kg error in VO2), but I like the concept. Shows why you should go steady state - consumption of carbohydrate vs running speed is nonlinear. If you go too fast for a while - it can cost a lot.

oh yeah, good luck Eric. Alan, has he had his VO2 max done before?

Today Eric won the SCIAC championship for the third straight time. It was a hard-fought race on a slow, muddy course -- real cross country. And, at least for me, it was worth missing the Tram run again to be there to watch. :D

I don't think he has but I'll remind him to do it. It's best to get that measurement while youth is still on your side!
