I would be strongly against a NRA or NP in the area.
both designations severely restrict access to areas.
Also, both would prohibit activites such as mountain biking and hunting - both of which I enjoy.
Say no to more gov't intervention.

Really? No biking in an NRA? (they've definitely decided against an NP)

Just off the top of my head, I was thinking that this would be just what the San Gabriel River drainage needs. There's so much crime, trash, and graffiti that I won't even go up there anymore. I'm too afraid my car will be stolen or vandalized. Were I to come back late (after dark) from a hike, I'd fear for my own safety. I hadn't thought of the biking issue (are you sure you can't bicycle in an NRA)?

Still, even with the restrictions that the NPS might bring, it would effectively result in more access for me. Maybe it would prevent Crystal Lake from being re-trashed now that it has been fixed up.

My experiences and official info on biking
Golden Gate - One of the birthplaces of MTB and the original spot is closed to it. Some, mostly fire road access.
Santa Monicas - mostly on fire roads, very little single track trails open to bikes
Lake Mead - Mentions some marked trails, I've seen mostly dirt roads allowed.

About half the NRA's are run by the NPS - and they are generally against it.

The NPS is also against hunting and does a lot to stop it, even where they have to allow it.

If given money (like the Adventure Pass $), the USFS should be able to solve problems; no need for a new designation - or a bunch of extreme NPS Rangers running around.

The NPS also likes very strict and difficult permit processes; closes areas a lot and likes to stop cross country travel.

The new wilderness designations in the ANF also stopped MTB in those areas.

Wow, i thought we had heavy ads on our newspaper site. This one has the expandable and the peel back making the page take a long time to load.
