Wildflowers and desert peaks

Friday, Mar 7, 2007 (day 1 of 3)
Wildflowers and Humbug Mountain in Joshua Tree

I drove to Joshua Tree in the dark and woke up the next morning to a field of flowers. The drive to Humbug trailhead took awhile cuz I kept pulling over for pictures! Humbug Mountain (2,277') was a nice easy loop hike on a ridge. I really enjoyed the solitude that day!

Nice photos. Now is the time for them out in the desert...I've seen millions in the last few weeks while GeoCaching and launching rockets.

Wow. Great shots. Do you know what the flowers are in the fourth photo? I don't know that I've seen those before; they're very beautiful.

I've seen your website before in some other context (that I can't remember). Glad to see you've made it over here and blessed us with some photos!

There's some serious launch facilities out there. I've been at RSS to watch rockets fly, blow up, or crash. We're talking real rockets, not the stuff you buy at the hobby shop.

I was wondering about that one too so I looked it up. It's Langloisia setosissima ssp. punctata or lilac sunbonnet for a common name. See here: http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/i ... ere-anno=1

and launching Rockets

We have five locations that we launch from...two in California and three in Nevada (depends on the size and altitude). For an FAA waiver to reach 100,000 feet and above we need to go to Nevada. Our current project is to hit 350,000' (beginning of "space"). Questions? See MikeJ's thread in General Chat.

The wonderful flowers and remote desert make it all the more rewarding.
ps the hiking after the rockets for recovery ain't bad either!
