Skyline Current conditions anyone?

Postby Carl F » Fri Dec 13, 2019 4:25 pm

Hi all, stuck in San Diego so sometimes hard to piece together conditions and come up with a safe plan. I would like to do Skyline Sat AM but have not seen any successful trip reports (just rescues) since the snow covered all those downed trees. I have the GPS coordinates so won't be completely lost but would have more confidence driving all the way up there if the trail was established. Can anyone chime in on the navigability of the trail starting at the trailhead (Flat Rock being the trailhead)...

Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays to all!!

I went up Sunday, the trail is well tracked. Snow starts on the traverse and there is only partial coverage, but what is there is often icy. Microspikes and trekking poles seem to be the preferred gear for the conditions.

Went up Skyline yesterday (Sat, Jan 12). Beautiful day. Bit windy up tram, but not bad. Snow starts in earnest at Flat Rock and full coverage from Traverse on. Wet packed with steps, so no need for snowshoes or even gators, but waterproof boots / shoes recommended. Snow was soft midday, so didn't even need Kahtoolas, but poles were helpful and it could've been icier earlier / later in the day.

Howdy All :)

Hiked up Skyline yesterday with Miracle Marilyn. Started about 5:40 AM and finished in about 7.5 hours. Donned traction devices (microspikes and Hillsounds) at beginning of traverse. There is a good track, which generally follows the actual trail. It got warm very quickly (surprising for January) once the sun came up (no clouds, no breeze). Even a desert dweller got too hot yesterday.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has been up to the tram on the trail recently after Ellen’s post? Ie; any new significant snow?

Howdy Joel :)

Hiked Skyline on Sunday with four friends. One of them (Neverwashasbeen) also went up last Wednesday after the new snow and broke in the trail (new powder) on the traverse :o He noted that there was significant melt off. We were fine in Microspikes and Hillsounds. I always have poles because I'm a spaz

It may snow on Saturday -- keep an eye on the tram weather weekly planner and Long Valley cam.

Howdy All :)

Went up Skyline yesterday with Tracy and PyroDude. We were looking forward to cooler temperatures as we ascended -- we got our wish.

It started to cool off significantly as we climbed out of Flatrock. It started snowing lightly before the traverse, so we added more clothing. Donned traction devices (Microspikes and Hillsounds0 at the traverse. The light snow turned to sleet  Fortunately, we finally got big dry snowflakes at Coffman's. Enjoyed celebratory beverages at tram with Cameron and Kalen before heading down and eating at the Original Las Casuelas.
