PS TRAM UPDATE

Postby tramtim » Sat Feb 23, 2019 11:58 am

What a weather event  The lower Station received the most rain in a 24-hour period that I’ve seen, over 9.5 inches, and North Chino canyon could not handle it all. As you know we had a flash flood come down the canyon clearing out the trees that grew in the creek for almost a mile, this is what filled up the culvert along with a rock or two. Currently we have Granite Construction working on the road so hopefully they’ll get the road passable but there are still a few spots along the sides that will also need to be repaired. Along with the road damage a floating tree ripped out the power feed to the Mountain Station so the Station is running on backup generators. There also where many shoots that had water flow that I’ve never seen, this flow causing mud and rocks to cover some of the parking lots as well as the up part of the road. Luckily there was no damage to the Tram itself and is running just fine.

Mother Nature has truly reminded us who is in charge! It is a different view up and down the creek without the trees. We all look forward in seeing everyone again (hopefully) soon :)

Thanks Tim,
Appreciate you filling everyone in. I know the tram is always quick to fix & repair whatever gets thrown at it, so kudo's to all the workers who are helping with this.
I guess the security camera's will be able to see anywhere now!
Glad the tram wasn't damaged, I started wondering about the base of the towers.

The Desert Sun appears to know nothing other than what the PR person wants to say. The journalism factor is missing.

I wonder if employees are being paid. I wonder if the tram company has adequate financing to handle this.

Is anyone hiking from Idyllwild to the tram in the snow?

I would think they would lose that much in a single day of closure. Perhaps they are cautiously coasting on business insurance that covers lost opportunity cost? That's not an accusation, careful planning for future events may well save both the Tram and their insurers money...especially if climate change is actually leading to wild swings. I am hesitant to translate weather into climate due to the mathematics involved, but in this case, as a species, I definitely think that discretion is the better part of valor. I looked into the impact of the storm after Ellen's comment. I had not seen the first few minutes of this:

https://nbcpalmsprings.com/2019/02/14/h ... de-county/

The first couple of minutes give the best picture. Later, the weather guy talks about over 7 inches of rain on San J. I don't think there's any way to plan for that.

So, business-wise, I hope the Tram re-opens soon. Climate-wise, I hope that the statistical risk becomes clear enough to warrant action soon, even on a governmental level.

The KESQ story appears to be a paraphrase of a press release that serves tram PR. The story could have been written by a machine. This reveals more about the sad state of journalism than it does about the tram.

My guess is that the tram is getting a quick fix, and that may be all the business needs.

I doubt that climate change has relevance to such business decisions. Public access roads to Palm Springs matter much more and hopefully the government is doing what is necessary to protect Palm Springs people. (I hope, but I don’t count on it.)

My understanding is that climate change will give us some wet and cold storms and winters occasionally until the Arctic melt is over. After that, only the heat may remain. What to do to adapt? Moving north may work out for some. I hear Portland is a popular refuge for now. As cool as Portland is, though, Palm Springs is cooler, at least for now. I hope it survives.

Here's another video of the flash flood at the tram. Maybe most have seen it.
