Night time weather Round Valley - Memorial Day

Postby HikerHappy » Fri May 11, 2018 8:04 am

We are planning an overnight in the May/June time frame and am wondering about average night time low temps at the Tamarack Valley/ Round Valley campsites. I'd love to bring my smaller lighter non-insulated sleeping pad, but concerned about nighttime lows at 8800 ft. Thanks for any all info.... Also wondering when the seasonal Ranger station is staffed for the summer? And lastly, water in Round Valley these days? If spigot is flowing does water still need to be treated?
Thanks to any who could help answer my questions...

Hi HikerHappy,

Temps should be very nice for your upcoming trip, although at present, temps, according to NWS are in the mid-high 30's around that elev., high 40's, (usually feels like 50'sF), during the day.
I went by the Round Valley spigot a week ago, it was running, (not strong), and still a sign recommending purifying. This comes from a Spring Box, (I believe), and sometimes things get in there. We had a fairly poor winter, so that water source may not last through summer.
I rarely go by that area on my way to the summit, and can't remember any staff at that temp Ranger Sta at the RV Jct. Seems they mostly use that to store emerg. eqmpt. and other supplies.
Have a great trip, ss

I went up through Round Valley yesterday and saw that
the water is only dripping out of the pipe. It will take quite
some time to fill a water bottle that way. Although we
are still early in the season, I wouldn't be surprised
if it dried up altogether quite soon. I hope that helps.

For recent weather (last 7 days) at the weather station in Long Valley near the tram (8600 ft) see https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/times ... C1&num=168

For a spot weather prediction near Round Valley: https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/times ... C1&num=168

For info about the barely-working Round Valley Spring see: https://www.facebook.com/Mt-San-Jacinto ... 248490815/

I never bothered with filtering that tasty spring water but my wife insists on filtering it anyway. YMMV

If you have to you can get water just below the upper tram station at the LONG Valley Ranger Station; they have a spigot on the porch in the back.

There is also currently water flowing up above Round Valley at Wellman Cienega according to https://sanjacjon.com/

I've never seen a ranger actually camping at the mini ranger station in Round Valley, but there's a decent chance of seeing a roving ranger on busy weekends.
