Summit conditions?

Anyone know if San Jacinto is currently summit-able?

Flew all the way out here from Ohio to do Cactus to Clouds with my fiancé, but we've heard there might be too much snow

Any information or tips would be appreciated! Thank you!

Your best bet weather-wise for Skyline or the full monty (desert to peak) is Saturday. This system may dump up to 10 inches of new snow at the peak -- may have a better idea tomorrow.

On the local news last night, they said the snowline for today's (Thursday) 'Pineapple Express' is forecasted to be about 9k. So that may clear out the snow left on Skyline by tomorrow (Friday), but make it tough going approaching the summit for a while.

If you're from Ohio, the amount of snow we get here will probably seem laughable to you. With the winter we've had and the warmth of this storm, there's a good chance that if you go ahead and start C2C at the museum Saturday morning, by the time you get to Long Valley the local hiking population will already have beat in a clear smooth trail to the summit. If not, you can still accomplish the section referred to as Skyline, which is in truth most of the real challenge anyway. That section is the steepest and has the most striking views (except the view from the summit), so you really can't lose at this point and may or may not end up saving the final short and fairly easy section for another day (maybe an upcoming anniversary?) Hope your trip turns out to be a wonderful experience!

Judging from the Long Valley cam yesterday and today, the snow level for the precipitation last night was lower than 9k, though not a lot of new snow at the Long Valley level. I personally would carry trekking poles and microspikes. They may not be necessary on Skyline, but it would not be pleasant to find they are when you don't have them. And if you are going on to the summit, ankle-high boots, wool socks, long pants and gaiters. And a Tom Harrison map and compass. There may be tracks going in different directions.

Trail/Weather Conditions for March 23rd, through 28th, 2018

All trails (including Willow Creek to Saddle Junction) are open. On Thursday we received about 1.25” inches of rain in Long Valley. There is no snow in Long Valley (next to Ranger Station) and about 2” to 7” inches of snow in the higher elevations towards the peak. Icy trail conditions in all areas above the Ranger Station. Micro spikes, or Yak Traxs, and hiking poles along with winter gear are highly recommended. The Round Valley water spigot is flowing (if not frozen). Trails are signed at trail junctions only. Good route finding and navigation skills are recommended. Please have the proper clothing/food/survival gear/water for the mountain environment. Stop by the Ranger Station for your free day hike permit & map. Friday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 33. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 43. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
Saturday Night - A slight chance of snow showers after 11pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 30. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday - Sunny, with a high near 39. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Sunday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 22.

Monday - Sunny, with a high near 36. Monday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 19.

Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 39. Breezy. Tuesday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 26. Blustery.

For what it's worth, as of yesterday there was ZERO snow or ice on Skyline up to Grubb's Notch (Long Valley). So a microspike free Skyline is there. I could only guess that microspikes might be necessary at some point to reach te summit.

Anyone have any current updates as to the condition of the trail from Long Valley to the summit?
