SFGate ran a great story celebrating Jean Pierre Marquant’s great hike across Death Valley in July 1966. Experts predicted he would die on his 106 mile journey. They warned him that he would not be rescued if he got into trouble. No cell phones back then anyway. Not even 911. The temperature rose to 130 degrees in the day, and never dropped below 110 at night. The ground temperature rose to 170. His shoes melted. He ascended Telegraph along the way. Already having a slight build, he lost 15 pounds from the exertion in the heat. He nearly died a few times, but he kept going and completed the trip. He told news reporters that he wanted to show his compatriots in France that adventure is still possible in America.
Viva la France!
Americans, what about us? Can we repeat Marquant's 1966 hike, 106 miles in Death Valley? Or, Skyline? Maybe. It is cooler there, and just a day hike.
