Skyline Rescue

Postby neverwashasbeen » Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:12 am

There appears to be a rescue ongoing on Skyline, it seems that helicopters don't fly in dust storms. Here's a link to the Palm Springs Police Departments press release: https://local.nixle.com/alert/5456361/

Good gravy! So, if I decide to hike Skyline in extreme heat (or lower temperatures, as the article stated), I will be OK if I bring lots of water, bring a cell phone, tell folks where I am going, and, most importantly, wear my electric pink shorts?

Maybe a more direct and forceful sign is required. Something like:

HEY IDIOT!
Don't hike this trail in summer.
It doesn't matter how much water you bring.
It doesn't matter how long you've been training.
It doesn't matter that this is the only week you can get out here.
DON'T DO IT!
Someone else is going to have to rescue you.
They'd rather be home with their family.
They're also smart enough to know not to hike this trail until Fall.
But they'll have to save you when they should let you walk out yourself
Or die.
GO HOME!
And come back this Fall
You'll probably still need to be rescued
But at least everyone won't think you're a complete and utter moron.
You are creating a bad name for the rest of us.
Sincerely,
The Local Hiking Community

Stunning literary performances by Sally and Halhiker. But I guess a 911 from 4239' at 3:35pm does call for high-performance comments. Is Cynthia going to rest on her laurels?

I don't think I can beat Hal or Sally! I laughed out loud at both posts. If it were up to me, I'd put up a sign with Hal's exact wording--festooned with a pair of pink shorts! But at the rescue story, I wasn't laughing so much. :( What a monumental waste of time and resources for all concerned. I've said it before, but. Something. Needs. To. Be. Done.

The Desert Sun says there was a dust storm. I never experienced one of those. I wonder if anyone is going today because of the cloud cover

Well, I guess I could add a little fuel to this. According to a tram personnel, it was a Mom & 10 yr. old! Maybe someone could verify this, or not.
If so, there may be more than just a rescue that comes from this.

I realize there's a few very strong 10ish kids, (like the sisters who have won the women's Run to the Top / Baldy, who Zip has spoke of), but they better live in PHX & do long, tough climbs regularly.

So nice, (at times heavy) thunder & lightning above 9k this am, more predicted, Woo Hoo, forest is loving it, me too!
Tram stopped a few times momentarily because of it. Bring warm, wet-wx gear if you go up.

Well, you'd definitely rescue me with those shorts ... from a dull and boring day.

Yeah interesting that they say "lower"
Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue handles dozens of calls like this one every year and would like to remind everyone that with lower temperatures, the risk of hiking in these treacherous mountains increases.
Yeah, now that it's only 100 instead of 110, I think I'll go take a quick run up Skyline with Joycie.

Are there any warning signs at the bottom? That wouldn't be hard to do.
