The economics of energy are rather complex and I don't understand them, but I have always wondered about the way it is being done. Of course BLM and other government agencies (which is really the public) will make money leasing the land where the sites are developed, but those that manage our money in the federal government will just give that money earned back to big corporations developing the alternative energy projects in subsidies. There's no question that we need to be exploring and developing alternatative energy, but I have to question the methods being used. Why not cover the rooftops in urban areas with solar panels and let the individual property owners sell the excess they produce instead of letting a few big corporations benefit? Even better, why don't we all conserve more of our resources as you suggested Perry?
This maps shows the pink areas they are prefer to allow development:

In addition to allowing development in the development focus areas, I believe they want to place more limitations on access and recreation uses in the conservation areas.
