D O W N SKYLINE.....

Postby HikerLinda » Tue Nov 25, 2014 8:56 am

Monday, Nov 24th, 7 members (ages 56-73) of the hiking group SANDY SOULS hiked from GRUBS NOTCH to RAMON ROAD.

Total time on trail 8 hours.

Since we all had gone up Skyline trail in the recent past, we thought it would be interesting to hike down Skyline. Having wonderful desert views in front of us the complete day, we stopped for many, many photo opportunities.

Was wondering if anyone else has ever done the complete SKYLINE trail down?

Linda,

I've seen people coming down Skyline when I was going up, so I know that people are doing it. I've never had much interest in doing it myself. My knees cringe at the very thought.

I've done the whole thing but in segments. During snow season I've gone up to Flatrock and then run back down, and during the regular season I've brought water down and cached it at Flatrock from the top, then gone back up. It's very relaxing on the way down, though I find it a bit tedious dropping down to the museum from the picnic tables because of all the loose sand and gravel on rock. I think your route down to Ramon is the better choice. One thing to note - I really like that section at around 4000 feet where the "old" trail goes way off to the east and stays flat for a while. It's great for stopping and having lunch and just enjoying the view.
