Snow Creek Navigational Aid

Postby Hikin_Jim » Sun Nov 23, 2014 11:25 pm

There have been persistent reports of certain hikers not being able to find the PCT Trailhead in Snow Creek. I won't mention any names (ahem, Ellen), ;) but the Townsfolk were thinking of someone in particular who may well frequent this forum. In any event, the good people of Snow Creek thought they should make it more obvious which way to go to get to the Wildlife Refuge, PCT, etc. To that end, they have created a "landmark", shall we say? I think it's a brilliant idea. Here, see for yourself:

You mean the "Blair Witch" sign? You know, I appreciate the fact that they wanted it to look natural and artsy, but somehow it always gives me the feeling that I am going to end up forever lost in the wilderness, ending up again and again back where I started...you know, like what happens to Ellen!

The whole of Snow Creek is Blair-Witch-esque and eerie. A long time ago, my now-ex and I briefly owned a cabin there with the idea of renovating and moving in. I came to feel the place is just too weird--even for me. We sold it. I never felt so relieved in my life. IMHO some funny stuff happened there back in Ye Olde Native Americans Time. And actually, I never could seem to find the PCT trailhead either, so Ellen's not alone! :D

It's the "Bermuda Triagle" of trailheads. ;)

Howdy HJ :)

I'm never lost, it's just that other folks don't know where I am

Love the "Bermuda triangle of trailheads" comment as well as Cynthia's observations 8) Something about the Snow Creek PCT does feel malevolent, especially when it's dark and windy -- as it was last time.

Howdy Z :)

Yes, I do seem to have a knack for going round in circles on certain trails, both beginning with "S" I felt better reading that several trail runners got turned around the day before Sally and I hiked.

Miles of smiles,

The actual impetus for this post (other than taking the opportunity to tease Ellen at every turn) ;) was this bizarre auto stitch that Google did. I uploaded the following two photographs:

Google stitched them together like this:

Which is actually a pretty good job -- except that the Wildlife Refuge sign is now bizarrely large and spans Falls Creek Road.

Wow Jim, How cool to have Google build that sign over the road for all of us, it's like "Welcome to the Wildlife, seek Refuge now"!
This summer I saw 3 snakes on one outing, on just the first few miles, very cool.
