2 Night/3 Day Backpack Trip

Postby jlee20 » Sun Mar 23, 2014 11:19 pm

Hi there,

I wanted to do a 2 night/3 day backpack trip through Mt San Jacinto or somewhere similar. Is there a trail that anyone would recommend doing? I stumbled on a trip that someone did, and wanted to do something similar. See the trip below:

If anyone has any recommendations or anything else, let me know.

Thanks!

Hi there,

Why don't you do the exact same route or do it in reverse? it is a great route.

JohnRosen,

I think I will do this. So you recommend this trail? I plan to do this with my father sometime in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering how hard this trail is?

That is a very nice itinerary. Little Round Valley is one of my favorite camping spots up there. Your first day will be a bit strenuous, especially if your packs are heavy. If you keep the weight down it will be easier (duh!) Day two should be beautiful and fairly relaxing. Day three you'll be going down, back up, and down again and it may be a long but not too difficult day.
Enjoy!

So, would is the trail pretty straight forward? This will be the first time just my father and I are backpacking. Is it something that you guys would recommend. We have both backpacked before, but they were with friends, and guides, in Joshua Tree, that knew which way to go.

Thanks!

Yes, the trail is straight forward. Get a map (San Jacinto Wilderness by Tom Harrison Maps) and pay attention to the signs on the trail, and you can't go wrong. Rarely the trail signs are missing (vandalism  ), in which case you should consult the map.

A couple of miles into your hike on the 1st day you will come to Saddle Junction where there is a "hub" of trails. I believe some of the signs are in/on trees, and you will want to veer left.

When you get to the ".3 mi. to San Jacinto Peak" sign the trail gets fuzzy, but basically you just go UP. There is a rock scramble to the top. Usually there are other hikers you can follow if you're not sure.

The last 2 signs you need to keep an eye out for are on the Deer Springs Trail: the one on the right that will take you to Fuller Ridge (on your 2nd day day-hike); and the Strawberry Junction/ PCT trail that you will need to take to get back to your car at Humber Park.

Sally, thanks for all the info and help!

So can you tell me where the camping spot would be for Day 2? Day 1 is in Little Round Valley

Since it looks like you are going to explore Fuller Ridge on Day 2, you could either stay at Little Round Valley again on the second night, OR you could go down Deer Springs Trail and stay at Strawberry Junction camp, which would shorten your hike on Day 3.

I walked from home on 0/24 in Idyllwild went up dear springs made a left on the pct then noticed I forgot my tent poles so I cowboy camped at around 9000' less than a mile from LRV instead of going any higher without a tent. the next morning I hiked south on the PCT to Devil's slide to ernie maxwell trail and home. I made a video of the it yesterday. we had a dusting of snow yesteday the pictures were taken 1 day before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9bW26K ... JC2Lckdizw
