Water between Martinez & Toro?

Postby Robert Hunt » Fri Jan 24, 2014 11:30 pm

Hello all. I recently did a loop from Rockhouse Canyon (Borrego) to Dawn Peak on Santa Rosa Ridge to S22 & across Clark dry lake back into Rockhouse Cnyn. I'm thinking of doing a xcountry similer loop of both Martinez Mtn & Toro Peak, down to Dawn, & dropping east. I've been all over ridges SE of Toro but never down in the canyons.
Does anyone know of any water sources in the area south of Martinez (maybe a little SW)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As dry as it is I would not plan on finding any water. In mid November hiked Martinez Canyon to the Jack Miller Cabin and it was dry. No rain since then.

We need snow/rain badly. It's going to be a terrible fire year folks.

Contact dsefcik on the anza borrego forum. He may be able to provide some info about where the springs are.

Thanks for the tips guys. I did the Dawns loop in a day with 4 liters & like to carry my own water needs but it would be nice to know it's available in an emergency. I could use the water on Toro or just wait til we get a better rainy season. Ghost, dry in November...you are so right about fire danger in '14.

Ghost,
So no water near the reeds in Martinez? I was just in a canyon south of Martinez and found water there. Also, I've heard report of water in upper Horsethief near the spring there.

Hal & Blue

When we did the "Jack Hike" avoided the reeds by going up and over the hill/mesa to the south. Did not see any water at all except for a stagnant pool in the narrows a mile from the the cabin. Was the first time in seven trips to Martinez Canyon that we did not find water flowing. And that was on November 21st with very little rain falling since then.

Very well might have been water in the reeds but based on what I have seen and smelled in there, damn sure would purify before drinking.

Robert, good luck in your hiking and exploring! Hope it rains soon.

I admire so many of the on this forum and what you are capable of because you actually get out and do it! A couple of years ago I did a 72 hour solo trip from Rockhouse Cnyn to Toro, down Santa Rosa Ridge to S22 & back. In preperation, I climbed Toro from Rockhouse & dropped east to the base of Martinez Mtn & back. I saw alot of green patches in canyons but didn't actually go to any. You guys have me wanting to scout out that area further, thank you for that. Now lets all do a raindance & wash a window!
