Tram closing early Thursday

Postby tramtim » Wed Dec 11, 2013 6:34 pm

The Tram will be closing early on Thursday the 12, the last car down that night will be at 5pm, so if you’re planning on hiking don’t be late.

If you're late at least you've still got the Mule Shed Inn.

Actually, it's perfectly fine to hike Skyline when the tram is closed so long as you start a forest fire in the process.

Sean S, 32, of Cathedral City, went for a day hike up the Skyline Trail from Palm Springs to the Tramway. He did not know the Tramway was closed for maintenance work.
[The subject then lit a "signal fire".]
...the smoke turned into an out-of-control forest fire within 2 minutes

That's not the only incident. I can think of at least 2 others where signal fires got out of control. In several cases, the individual who started the fire came very close to getting caught in the subsequent forest fire.

Be careful out there.

OMG JIM! ROFL! That was the most hilariously wretched RMRU post ever!

What a story/moron! After cleverly starting at 10 am on July 1--while the tram was closed-- and then getting stuck on the big ridge, the subject 'went down into Tahquitz Canyon to find water." !!! Then he starts a 'signal fire' which immediately turns into a huge inferno in which he is about to be roasted like a big white marshmallow--if not for the incredibly fortunate arrival of the helicopter which winched him out on a hundred foot cable. This guy pretty much personifies the phrase 'dumb luck". Best laugh I've had all week.

The best part was "subject was wearing a Superman Logo tank top."
They've even got a photo of him in it!

Clearly, I need to spend more time reading the RMRU archives. :) :)

I had read the post but did not follow the link until Cynthia pointed it out. Yes, it was funny. My favorite part was the writer's phrasing when he said,

"Stewart, clad in a Superman-logo tank top, had to jump through some flames to get the harness."

Nice touch, mentioning what the SAR crew undoubtedly commented on as it was happening. I'm surprised the helicopter pilot could see to fly, what with tears of laughter streaming down his face. I wish I knew the crew. I'd like to send them shirts that say:

So you think your job is hard?
We had to save Superman!

Thanks for the post HJ (and Cynthia for pointing out the funny link) and bless those good folks at SAR!

Zip, Pete, who wrote the article for RMRU is a member of this board and posts from time to time. I'm sure you can contact him and get more information on the team members involved.
Happy Trails!
