San Jacinto Hike

Postby Birdman » Thu Dec 05, 2013 2:55 pm

Hi

Im looking for a good route up San Jacinto. My wife and I have been meaning to hike up to the summit for some time so we hope to go next weekend before the snow arrives proper.

Any suggestions?

We are pretty fit, and have been thinking of doing the C2C hike but i think i'd like to try it when the days are a little longer.

Comfortable with moderate routefinding, and have hiking crampons etc, but happy not to use them.

Many thanks!

C2C is 10,800 feet or so of gain. Unless you've done something like that before, you might try one of the more modest routes first.

Here's a map link. I've outlined the three most commonly used routes to get to the summit. See what you think of those.

The "tram route" is the easiest. Marion Mountain is the steepest. Coming from Humber Park is the longest.

Thanks Hikin Jim thats great info - i think we have missed the boat for hiking tomorrow as i hadnt realised we'd need a permit (should have guessed)! But we'll get up one of those routes soon.

Probably just stay around the San Gabriels somewhere, but were hoping to play in some snow.

Thanks again

Permits are free and available at the self serve kiosks at the NF Ranger Station in Idyllwild and at the State Park Rnger Station in Idyllwild.
If you take the tram, the Long Valley Ranger Statio issues walk up permits.

Towbradley,

You can do it via any trail on the west side (Fuller Ridge, Seven Pines, Marion Mountain, Deer Springs, Devil's Slide, and South Ridge). I just listed a few popular routes (Marion Mtn via Little Round Valley, Devil's Slide via Wellman Divide, and from the tram).

Shoot, you can do it from the Mexican border via the PCT if you want to!
