Indian Canyons reopen

Postby Florian » Tue Nov 19, 2013 6:41 pm

The Indian Canyons (Palm, Andreas, Murray, etc.) south of Palm Springs reopened yesterday, 11/18, after 2+ month closure due to flooding out of the road near Hermit's Bench. You can see how high the flow was along the canyon walls. Pretty amazing. If you have an annual pass they are extending your expiration date by 2 months.

I hiked the Palm Canyon, Dry Wash, Vandeventer, Victor trail loop this morning.

Yes. $80/yr or $50 for 6 months.

Well then...Thank you, that does make a difference. Haven't been back there in years. I could never stomach the price increase.
Do you know if they allow overnight parking"

No overnight parking allowed. I hike in the canyons quite often and also like cycling up the road so i get pretty good use out of my pass.

I wonder if the Maynard Mine trail is open. It seems to me the top must overlook a lot of the eastern edge burn area, or have experienced some burning itself. That's one of my favorite trails and I'd like to go up one of these days.

The West Fork trail was open, or at least not signed as being closed, on Tuesday. I didn't check Maynard Mine trail but assume it's open as well.

Hi Florian. Did the mountain fire burn down into Andreas or Murray Canyons?

None of the main palm groves that people usually visit burned. The fire stayed fairly high up Murray and Andreas canyons maybe down to around 4000' level or so. It did burn lower into west fork of Palm Canyon to somewhere around 2500'. I haven't been up that way to see close up yet.

The reason I'm wondering about the Maynard Mine trail is that during the fire, it appeared that the upper section was burning. But of course without pine trees etc the damage may have been relatively superficial and perhaps the tribal rangers cleared it out.

I'll have to check it out and report back. :)
