Backpack Trip Questions

Hi all, my daughter and I are planning a backpacking trip on Deer Spring Trail out of Idyllwild in a few weeks (she's . We're headed to Strawberry Junction to camp one night. I've called the ranger station about 10 times at different times of day but can't reach anyone to ask my questions... hoping this might work.

I'm wondering if Marion Creek is running high enough to serve as a water source for us?

I am also wondering what kind of bear protection we should consider for our food?

Lastly, I am wondering what temps have been like during the day and at night so we can plan appropriately with our gear & clothing.

Can't speak about water in Marion creek -- you may be able to melt snow.

We may get a dusting of snow Easter Sunday.

Bears are not a concern but beware the little critters. My friend Sally left food in a pot years ago and a critter ran off with it. They found the pot licked clean about 1/4 mile from their campsite in Little Round Valley.

Thanks for the weather link & the news about bears -- phew. We'll probably bring rope to hang our food to keep it "safe" from little critters. Thanks again!

I wouldn't count on Marion Creek as a water source at that elevation. Strawberry Cienega should be flowing nicely. It's about a 30 minute hike from Strawberry Junction. There is a seasonal stream just east of Straberry Junction that can be a source of water this time of year, but I haven't checked it lately.
