Howdy All,
I headed up Skyline around 6 am. It was wonderfully cool and the rain made the trail just a bit softer on the feet. Took a nice break at St. Florian's cache and admired snow capped San Gorgonio. There was a dusting of snow on and off up to the traverse, then continuous snow thereafter. All was quiet except for the crunch of my boots and my deep breaths as I slowly made my way up to Coffman's and then Grubbs. It was so peaceful and healing -- I wanted that state of bliss to last forever.
I was enjoying a Stone IPA (the Arrogant B pump had problems) when an elderly British woman named Lorna and her daughter Fiona sat down. We started chatting and I learned this amazing 88 year old woman was in England during the Battle for Britain. During the war, she was an expert at detecting Nazi forgeries of British pounds. Her husband was a German Jew who had served under Rommel before leaving in 1937.
Thanks to the mountain for the dual gifts of nature and people.
Miles of smiles,
Ellen
PS On a practical note -- carried microspikes but did not need them. The snow was powdery and I sunk about 4 to 6 inches. I suspect it will get more icy due to melting and refreezimg
