Be advised that the road just below the saddle (cut-off to Boulder Basin) was heavily eroded from this last weeks rains, take caution in negotiating over the rutted out bedrock at and below the water tank well and faucet (now closed).

Yes, it's open and so is the lookout tower.

They did such a nice job grading the road last month, but that spot you are talking about was getting rough even before the rains! I hope my 2wd Element can get thru there. So, no water at the spring? Is the faucet actually capped now? I am planning on camping at Boulder Basin this coming weekend. I usually toss my water jugs in the car empty and fill them at that faucet. I guess I will call ahead Friday morning to verify.

I called the Idyllwild ranger station this morning. They recommend a high clearance vehicle or 4wd to get up the road due to the rain damage. They also confirmed that the water spicket is temporarily shut off due to damage. Well, since it doesn't take too long to get up there, I'm going to give it a shot.

Greetings from Boulder Basin CG! The road had a few rough spots for the first 4 miles where water had rushed across, then just before the water spicket, it was very rough, just as the OP had mentioned. We made it thru in our 2wd Honda Element pretty easy though. I stopped at the water spicket, it was working, but had a sign that mentioned "non-potable" slapped over the original sign. Even the road into Boulder Basin had some pretty rough spots. Even though the ranger suggested a high clearance or 4wd, there were a few small cars in the campground, even a Toyota Prius. You just have to take it slow and easy thru the bad areas. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
