Permits

Postby timotay » Wed May 30, 2012 6:29 pm

I know this must have been discussed before. Myself and a buddy are hiking from Humber Park to Skunk Cabbage meadow, spending the night then hitting the summit, then camping at Round Valley. Do I need National Forest permit, State park permit AND an adventure pass??

You need separate camping permits from forest service and from the state park. For just hiking you only need permit from one or the other but overnight you need one from each agency. The adventure pass is just for parking. If you're parking at Humber Park you'll need one.

Or maybe you can pretend you're a PCT through hiker. They aren't required to get permits!

Thanks for the reply. I finally got through to the ranger from the state park and she said exactly that, except for the through hiker part.

Actually, PCT'rs ARE requited to get permits.
If you are travelling more than 300 consecutive miles you can get a PCT permit and no other permit is required.
If you are only doing a section, or a couple sections, you are required to get permits from each agency.

However...

When I got my permit to hike from the 10 fwy to the 74 on the PCT, I had picked it up in Idyllwild the week before. The volunteer noted where I was starting my hike and where I was ending it (on the permit). She then asked if I was camping anywhere along the trail. I pointed out that I would be staying near some of the campsites. She said that if I stayed AT a designated campsite I would need additional permits. I told her that I would be well outside of the regular campsites. She noted those areas on my permit and told me that was the only permit that I needed.

Actually it's 500 consecutive miles for a PCTA permit.

LMAO.
Well done...

Yeah... apparently, my third leg has given me a sense of 'entitlement'. :-)
