Snowshoes still desirable

Postby davenose » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:44 am

I just climbed to the peak from the Marion Mountain trailhead Sun 4/22. The snow is pretty consistent above the junction with the 7 pines trail.

I managed to the peak with just standard ankle-top boots and gaiters, but my boots soaked through by the time I got to the peak (good thing I brought a pair of socks).

I'm killing myself for leaving my mountaineering boots & snowshoes at my car. While there were some sections on the standard trail above 9000' without much snow where one might remove snowshoes, they would still be an advantage overall. Also, there are portions of the standard trail above the Fuller ridge junction that still do not have tracks; more direct winter routes appear to still be in use.

Devils slide to San Jacinto Peak

Postby ziplinesd » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:56 am

4/22-12, I went up devils slide route to the peak. There was a mile and a half section of 2'-3' of snow up past saddle Junction to Wellman's divide and another mile section of heavy snow on peak trail. I post holed about 20 times but made it without gaiters or snow shoes.
