How much snow above Idyllwild?

Postby DaddyLongLegs » Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:07 pm

How much snow is there between roughly 6000-8500 feet in the vicinity of Idyllwild? Any specific info about coverage on the Seven Pines Trail will be especially appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Sam. Patrick and I were just emailing today about some routing and scouting. I don't have any idea on the conditions up there, but good luck to you two on that upper route - "You take the high road, I'll take the low road.." (Hey, you're a musician, do you know Loch Lomond? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzQ1pNfbe3Q I like that old tune, although I don't know that I have any Scotch in me as far as genes go, but I may have had a little of the liquid version...)

Anyway, hope you have some fun up there. Watch out for that lilbitmo...could be a bad influence...

Presently watching the video and savoring Glenlivet!

Zip, these two are perfect influences on each other...they deserve to be out there together.

Sam: Yeah! There's almost no form of music that I don't like.

Steve: Yeah, huh?

Seven pines has been closed forever is it open again and fixed up? I did do the climbers trail (they don't call it the climbers trail for nothing = fun) to suacide rock trail then dear springs up to strawberry jct then down the PCT to almost red taquits 10 days ago and dear springs was pretty clear of snow and it seems like dear springs would have about the same conditions as seven pines. Strawberry ceniga was mostly clear of snow also but once I got behind the mountain on the PCT it was snow the rest of the way and in taquits valley there was only 1 set of footprints and a foot deep in places no footprints once past the valley on pct . The PCT to red taquits was whatever my gps sayed since nobody has been nutty enough to hike/posthole around back in there like myself and the snow hid any trail also there are alot of trees down back there witch made trail finding even more fun the snow was up to my knees at all times deeper in places and it was getting late so I turned around and camped in the valley I was feeling pretty alone on the PCT to Red T since no one had been there for at least 2 weeks. Call me a wimp but I orderd a PLD and will be trying at red T again next week with a chance at being found if need be. I love living in Idyllwild been here 6 months. I just load up my backpack and walk out my front door 1 of 2 ways either up or down the hill.

Are you referring to the road or trail? A ranger I spoke with on the phone yesterday assured me that the road was open to Seven Pines trailhead.

Thanks for all the info!

I cheked the web site and it say's it's open so it must be. Maby the yellow leged frog has made a comback I think that might have had somthing to do with it being closed. That frog has closed alot of trails and streams up here. I have proubly spent over a 2 months of camping in the san jacintos in the last 6 months and I'v never seen a ranger in the high country anyway's. I just think of a permit as 1 less thing to worry about and both ranger station's are on my way to most trails so I always get !. Have fun and please let us know how it was.

Is the road to Seven Pines a black top surface or is it a dirt road? - That will make a difference which vehicle to bring. Thanks
