I moved up to Idyllwild fron newport 4 months ago and have become addicted to backpaking for days on end but I do relize that I am still a flatlander and need to find some classes around Idyllwild before I can safley going out on my own in the snow.

REI offers some classes, but I've always been a little dubious of their prices. The Sierra Club has some good stuff, but their classes are in Long Beach, Orange County, Pasadena, and West LA -- not exactly convenient to Idyllwild.

For BP'ing, just going out with friends is often enough...

Definitely take a look at wildernessoutings.com
They are in Idyllwild. I have taken their Wilderness First Responder classes three times as well as a beginning class in rock climbing. I have been very happy with this organization.

Long nights

One of the first things you'll learn about winter backpacking is that the nights are long and the days are short.
