C2C / Skyline

Postby lesper4 » Mon Sep 12, 2011 3:38 pm

Howdy everyone! I thought I would announce my intentions so as to get some input and see who I might see that same day? Hopefully Ellen will be hiking? I am planning a hike (C2C) for the 16th of October with 8 people. Half of us are stopping at the tram (starting early) and ther other half are going to the top. Two of us have done the skyline trail before. The full moon is scheduled for the 11th so light should be well. I will continue to check the weather at the tram and the desert floor as our date gets closer. Are there any large groups that weekend (sierra club etc)? I think last time they were on Saturdays.

Since we have a number of pople starting and finishing at different times is there any easy way to stage cars? Doesnt the tram road gate close at night? Where would be the best place to leave a car at the bottom of the tram entrance if we were to hitch a ride down. We are all driving from the IE the night of the hike.

I am suggesting people bring (we have a map):
-lots of liquid (6-32 oz bottles: half Gatorade, half water)
-2 meals and snacks
-light outerwear (jacket, beanie, gloves)
-good headlamp
-sun protection
-hiking poles
-I am also going to try and make sure many of us have two way radios.

Yeah one of our groups is leaving around 2-2:30 the other group is leaving at 4:30. We left at 4:30 last year and made it to the top in 7 hours (for our first time).

We left around 6:00 both times and it took about 7 hours the first time in October. Second time was in the end of May and it was much hotter than we expected, took us about 10 hours. The second trip was actually harder than when I hiked Mt. Whitney and we only went to the Tram... Heat really does make a big difference adjust accordingly. Fist hike I went through 70oz and the second time I used about 140oz of water!

Pretty sure we will have good weather in October! Going for the Summit :D !

Howdy Lesper4 :)

Provided the weather cooperates, I'd love to hike Skyline and possibly C2C that day. You're referring to Sunday October 16, right?

The tram gate doesn't open until 5:30 AM. Another option is to leave a car towards the bottom of the tram road in a legal place. Also, taxis are inexpensive when you share the ride 8)

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Yes Sunday. I think we will leave a car at the museum and one at the the bottom of the tram road somwhere and have one person hitch a ride down. Maybe my wife can hang out in town.

C2C Saturday Oct. 8

Postby Jason_ak » Tue Oct 04, 2011 9:36 pm

A group of four of us are going to do the C2C all the way to summit, with the other part of our group joining at the tram to summit. Anyone else doing C2C that day? What time for start 3:30am - 4:30am? We did Skyline to the tram in March, now we want to go all the way to summit. Reply if you want to join.

Our group has changed some so it will be 5 people at 4:30 from the base where we meet two more at the tram (and loose two) and then go to the summit. Last time it took us 12+ hours. We are aiming fo 7 hours for the first 10 hours putting us at the rager station before lunch.

Possibly will be going up October 18th or 19th 4:30am headed for the Summit.

I've done the tram twice so far; one trip only took about 7 hours. The other time we were caught in some unexpected heat and took us about 12 hours... Both times we left at 6:30 to avoid headlamps.

Going for the summit I think it’s a better call to start as early as you’re able to wake up. Also just in case you get stuck coming down late a headlamp wouldn’t hurt. Trying to pack as light as possible to make time, re-fueling supplies at the tram then taking a break before heading for the summit. Idea is to turtle up but stay consistent and eat on the go as much as possible.
Any pointers from others who have summited? Should we try and leave earlier :?: Friend is coming in from out of town so were a little limited due to his late night arrival.

There should be some good reports after this weekend as the moon is getting pretty full and the weather is nice.
