Saturday Skyline Madness

Postby Ellen » Mon May 23, 2011 12:43 pm

Howdy All :)

It's official -- I think that I saw more people on Saturday on Skyline than on any of my other trips :o Many new faces and lots of regulars.

Karin and I left at 4 AM -- thank goodness. It was a completely different experience than Wednesday's mist hike. Within 10 minutes, I was sweating and wiping my face :? At least I had new batteries in my headlamp and didn't see any rattlesnakes. We ran into Tim on the trail several times 8)

Took a breakfast break at Flat Rock at 8 AM then headed up through the manzanita. Right before the traverse I heard howling. Well, that couldn't go unanswered, so I howled back. The two happy male "wolves" passed us on the traverse, which was blessedly cool. Coffman's Crag came out of hiding to greet us. I'm always happy to reach Grubbs Notch -- there was a regular party going on, which continued to grow in size as more and more people popped up.

Had the usual celebratory beer (somehow it always tastes good whether I am hot or cold) before having a great lunch at you know where  Thanks for the great day Karin :D

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

I know....:( I have been trying to throw some different terrain into the mix. Attempted williamson (have to go back). Canyoneering. Lone Pine and Olancha Peak.
I will be local again mid June-July. Hopefully, i will get a couple skylines in before the heat sets in.

Howdy Jim :)

I just added up my elevation gain for last week (Monday to Sunday) -- I climbed 20,600 ft (two Skylines and the Jepson/San Gorgonio hike) 8)

So, I did achieve your 20 K weekly gain goal  and won't have to do that again anytime soon.

Does this mean I have to put a warning label on my jokes?

Ellen, it was good to meet you again. We met almost exactly a year ago at the museum and then on the trail. This time we were sitting at Flat Rock when you got there.

My friend ended up going to the peak. My knee started to hurt a little and I decided that it would be more prudent to not put an extra 10 miles and down hill stuff on it. So I hung out at the stream from Round Valley for a bit and then at the tram station. There I got to chat with a few of the huge number of Skyline hikers of the day.
