Snowshoeing from the tram

This weekend looks like a fabulous time to play in lots of the brand new white stuff

Who's on? I went up last year on Christmas day with Lance and we had a glorious day. I wouldn't mind going up both days.

My husband and I are planning to go up on Saturday and stay overnight. We are new to San Jacinto and snow travel, so we want to take a couple days to practice our skills. We just finished getting all the needed winter gear. We have a lot of experience in hiking/backpacking, but just now decided to get more involved in the winter climbing. Would love to meet you! Maybe you can suggest a good place to set up camp a couple of miles from the tram. We plan to summit on Sunday, then pack up and go down.

Leeza22, i would suggest that you and your husband go to Round Valley, it's close to run back to the tram if you need to. Then a nice hike to the peak from there.

Is there snow on the Devils Slide Trail? Will it be suitable for snowshoeing this weekend?

I think some folks on the board live in Idylwild. I believe the snow level is suppossed to drop to 6 K by Wed night. I've never snowshoed up Devil's Slide but have heard it's wonderful. Would be helpful to know the road conditions as well. My low wheelbase Honda Accord is one reason I keep going up the tram to get into the snow.

I agree with Neverwashasbeen -- Round Valley is an excellent place to camp as well as a nice hike in snowshoes -- it's a gradual climb I suspect that we'll have to break trail from the Ranger Station.

I am pretty sure I am going to go up on Christmas Day..my own kind of personal present..standing on top San Jacinto with 3 brand new feet of snow beneath me sounds crazy and fun..I got a new camera so I would like to take a bunch of pictures to..Hope to see you on the trail

and I would imagine Devils Slide would be interesting with all of this snow..I was just up that trail a couple of weeks ago and it it still had 6-8 inches of snow in spots from Humber Park till about 9000 ft then it went to about a foot..had a few icy spots so not so bad..but the trail was still easily visible, I would think there could be some crazy spots with ice, but with fresh snow could be real fun.
