Tom Harrison Map?

Postby kngalaric » Sat Nov 20, 2010 1:53 pm

Anybody have one?

This is a minor question, but I am working on a book and I am trying to compare mileage estimates on the south ridge trail with the state park map and other sources.

I've always felt the mileage from South Ridge TH to Tahquitz to be between 3.0 and 3.6 miles - I can never get an accurate gps reading for the trip.

And, now I can't find my Harrison map. I want to be close to accurate in my descriptions, so I'm going to use an average. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I need:

Distance from TH to Tahquitz cutoff
and distance from Chinquapin to Red Tahquitz use trail (if that is even on there).

Thanks,

Allen Riedel

Would the state park map be helpful? It shows 4 miles to the junction.

I have tracked:
trail head to Tahquitz- 3.35 miles
Tahquitz to the PCT- 0.55 miles
PCt/Tahquitz turn off to use trail- 1.4 miles
PCT to Red Tahquitz- 0.5 miles

Yeah, hvydrt, that is more like what I think, but people have relentlessly bagged on me on localhikes.com for my postings of the distance, saying things like - it's 4.5 miles, blah, blah, blah.

I've made it to the top of Tahquitz before in an hour and 40 min, so it has to be about that distance.

Thanks everyone!

I have the Tom Harrison Map and it shows 3.6 miles from the TH to Tahquitz Peak and 0.4 miles more to the PCT. I don't see any sign of the use trail to Red Tahquitz on the map.

Harrison doesn't mark use trails on any map of his that I've seen.

The use trail to Red Tahquitz is a pretty well established trail and is generally pretty followable. I'd almost elevate it to the status of a "track" (a term used in the San Gorgonio Wilderness to indicate a use trail that has become well established).
