Hey everyone!

A friend of mine is opening an account with Spot. There is a min. order of 5, 2 are accounted for. We need to get 3 more buyers. We will be getting them at cost so you will save about $50 to $60 on the basic model and about a $100 on the newer model. They also have a SAR insurance policy for spot users that pays up to $100,000 a year for search and rescue for only $12.95 a year. It would be nice to see RMRU or any other S&R get a check for the dangerous job they do. Check out the web page and let me know if you are interested.

Does SAR charge the SPOT user for rescue? If not, there won't be any claims for the insurance co. to pay. ? How would RMRU get paid?

If you go to the spot website it will tell you how the $12.95 insurance plan works in regards to payment and services.

The GEOS benefit provides up to $50,000 per occurrence in reimbursement for qualified SAR extraction-related expenses for which you are held responsible up to two (2) events per year. Do not assume that the official emergency services will have the personnel and equipment required available at that critical time when you need help fast. In some countries, there may not be official help available at all! Even within the United States, you may be held responsible for the cost of a medical evacuation via helicopter and that cost may not be fully covered by your insurance. Your $12.95 investment could save you up to $100,000.

Unless I am missing something. Seems RMRU will have to charge the insured SPOT owner to recover any costs.

RMRU itself would never charge a subject for a rescue. RMRU serves at the pleasure of the Riverside County Sheriff; RSO would be the entity to "charge" the subject, which at this time is NOT their policy. (If the subject is from another county, that county is charged but perhaps that is TMI.)

There are agencies around the US (e.g., White Mtns in New Hampshire and, I believe, Grand Canyon?) that DO charge individuals for rescues. And it seems this is when the SAR insurance would be well worth the cost. As you can tell from the minimal fee, it's not something that is paid out very often or they would have to charge more for this benefit.

In any case, I am a big fan of SPOT. Not just for its emergency use, but it's fun to track a loved one's progress during a hike. Unfortunately, depending on the terrain, it's not always able to obtain a sat signal (e.g., Grand Canyon rim-to-rim).
