Round Valley Backpack

Helloooo,
I am new to this board and I did a search however I still have some questions.
I am going on my first backpacking trip to Round Valley Oct 15th and have a few questions.

How should I store food? What should I consider?
What is the water situation like this time of year?

I am planning on the nights being cold!
Thanks for any advice you may offer.
I can tell that you all have a love and appreciation for this mountain so I am eager to see it for myself.

Bears aren't really a problem in the San Jacintos, so a canister isn't needed. Squirrels and chipmunks might be, but I've never had a problem.

There's water coming out of a pipe at the main trail junction in Round Valley. It should be flowing. The water should be treated.

No bears to worry about, however as HJ pointed out, there are other animals to worry about. On a trip to RV with several Dads and boys a couple of years ago, we hung heavy duty trash bags over a tree limb to keep them away from various critters, but those were attacked by ravens.

We are having difficulty finding information on the water situation for Mt. Jacinto SP along the Fuller Ridge Trail to Little Round Valley, where we'll be staying for a night.

Does anybody know if there is currently water in DEER SPRINGS CREEK, or in another creek along our route?? Or if there is water in Little Round Valley itself.

Please please please, anyone with insight, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

Nikki,

If you're headed up this weekend, yes there should be water in the Deer Springs Area and at Little Round Valley. There are a couple of other small creeks between LRV and Deer Springs that may be flowing as well. My feeling is that the water should be flowing for several more weeks at least.

There are no bears in the San Jacinto wilderness, so an inexpensive method to keep the critters from your food is to use an empty 1-gallon metal paint can. They'll easily hold 2 days worth of food. You can buy empties at Home Depot, Lowes, or any specialty paint store (Frazee, Sherwin-Williams, etc). They're metal, so the squirrels and birds can't chew or poke through them, and they can be tied to a solid tent anchor, small tree, or other solid object to keep them from being carried off (also stack rocks around and on it).

Phydeux has a great idea on the paint cans for food storage, but I'm too cheap and just use my cooking pots for the same purpose (that's when I get to backpack anymore).
