"Attention Hikers - Due to the strong likelihood of death on this route, please carry a current picture ID and next of kin information in your right rear pocket to aide in the prompt identification and processing of your remains."

I think a very simple official sign would be best ..
► DO NOT HIKE THIS TRAIL IN SUMMER ◄
The current sign up above the Lykken junction lists all the dangers and precautions and everyone thinks they are too smart for that and hike the trail anyway.

I think whatever sign it is, it should have a running count of the number of deaths and rescues for the year.

We could have any number of signs with the sternest warnings possible and idiots will still be out there doing stupid things.
I suggest this:
The Skyline Trail is in a no rescue zone.
Be prepared for extreme conditions because you are completely on your own at this point. Government agencies are not permitted to do rescues in this area.
If you encounter conditions for which you are not prepared you will probably die. YOU and you alone are responsible for your own safety and well being.
Enjoy your hike.
