Tahquitz Peak

Postby Juneboarder » Tue Jun 29, 2010 2:20 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum, but not new to hiking. I have hiked all over SD County, and am ready to exand into the Idyllwild area and take on some larger, more intense hikes.

My first hike planned is this Saturday; I'll be starting out at Humber Park with a group of 4 (plus one dog) and we'll go up the Devils Slide Trail to Tahquitz Peak. I haven't decided how we'll get back down, does anyone have suggestions on if the out and back is the best, or if cutting through Tahquitz Valley offers better views/scenery, or what about taking the South Ridge Trail back to Humber Park via Ernie Maxwell? Is there still snow on Tahquitz Peak?

If there is anyone interested in meeting up, I have one empty space on my permit for 5...

Thanks for any and all info and help :)

It is probably best to come back down the Devil's Slide Trail. Going down the South Ridge in the afternoon is HOT and exposed to the sun. Also, to get to the Ernie Maxwell you have to walk a bit downy the road and that's boring.

I would recommend taking the extra time to hike over to Red Tahquitz. It has tremendous views looking east over the desert and along the Desert Divide.

Here, here. There's no official trail, but there's a very followable use trail. Magnificent views.

Red Tahquitz you say? I can definitely do that, but I don't know about my sister that will be hiking with me. Do you know how much distance and elevation that adds to the hike? It sounds like something I would be interested in :)

Hey, Lcpl... meet us up there on Saturday; we might just do Red Tahquitz.

Your sister shouldn't have trouble getting over to Red Tahquitz. If it weren't 4th of July weekend I'd be in, but we're staying down here. I might be up the next weekend for conditioning, but we're definitely doing San Bernardino on July 23-25.

Would you just take the PCT to Red Tahquitz from Tahuqitz Peak, or is there another way to get there?

This should help:

The use trail is well worn in, so look for that before you go up.
