One Day Push: Traverse of the Santa Rosas?

I am considering hiking from Villager to Toro Peak in one day. Has this ever been done before? also, would a machete help?

Well, that's kind of a rough one... Steve and Fernando have probably done it as an out and back and carried an extra 30 liters of water to cache along the way! Sorry I can't offer any real help, but it sounds like fun on a cool autumn day.

Marmot, can't say I've heard of many folks trying it north bound as you stated but either way that traverse as Lee pointed out is one hell of a trek. I'm not speaking from experience but I've been in those hills a bit and wouldn't recommend an attempt in anything but the coolest (without too much snow) conditions. The biggest obstacle is the amount of water you need to carry unless you cache some ahead of time.

On your question of the machete. From my experience there are few hikes where swinging a machete is less fatiguing that charging through in a long sleeved shirt. They do work well if your trying to cut trail, but for back country travel I'd pass.

did the traverse years ago in the spring. villager to toro. did a couple hikes in to cache water days before. best bet is late fall, with one cache.
